The highly anticipated rematch between Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois is facing uncertainty due to concerns over the scheduled February date, as raised by promoter Eddie Hearn.
Hearn expressed reservations about Joshua’s readiness for the fight, citing the brief interval since their previous encounter. Joshua suffered a devastating knockout loss to Dubois in September at Wembley, hitting the canvas four times.
Following that defeat, plans were set in motion for a rematch in Saudi Arabia in February, offering Joshua an opportunity for redemption. However, Hearn revealed that the proposed timeline is now under scrutiny.
“Currently, our primary concern revolves around the timing,” Hearn explained to Sky Sports. “Joshua needs sufficient time to address minor injuries and allow for adequate recovery. Typically, this necessitates a five-week hiatus from punching. Given the February deadline, we’d need to initiate training camp within three weeks, which is an exceptionally tight schedule.”
Despite these challenges, Hearn confirmed Joshua’s unwavering desire to confront Dubois again.
Nonetheless, Hearn hinted at a possible postponement to May, citing it as a more feasible target. “Ideally, we’re aiming for a May return. The current timeline does feel rushed,” he noted.
“Physically, a brief extension would be beneficial. While sometimes we must push forward despite less-than-ideal circumstances, we need to assess Joshua’s preparedness carefully.”
Although the February date remains a possibility, Hearn emphasized the need for swift decision-making. “Joshua has unequivocally expressed his desire for the rematch. The question remains whether he’ll be adequately prepared for February. It’s not entirely ruled out, but we acknowledge the condensed timeline,” Hearn added.
An alternative scenario could see Joshua facing Tyson Fury instead, contingent upon Fury’s victory in his upcoming rematch against Oleksandr Usyk on December 21. Should Fury, 36, triumph over Usyk, 37, it could pave the way for a colossal bout against Joshua.
Hearn didn’t dismiss the possibility of bypassing Dubois in favor of a more lucrative encounter with Fury next summer. “It would be frustrating to commit to the Dubois rematch only to discover Fury’s victory would have enabled a monumental May showdown. Whether Fury wins or loses, a summer bout against Joshua remains viable. If he secures the title, Joshua will face him for the world championship.”
The decision regarding the Dubois rematch’s timing hangs precariously in the balance, leaving Joshua’s next move uncertain.
