Tragedy struck in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday morning, resulting in the loss of six lives and injuring five others in a devastating road crash.
The accident occurred at Oke Eleshin, Amuloko, on Akanran Road, within the Ona Ara Local Government Area, involving a tile-laden trailer and a soft drink-carrying lorry.
Two tricycles were caught in the disaster, claiming six lives and leaving five others with various injuries, including a pupil who lost their mother in the crash.
Four injured victims, including two primary school students, received treatment at the nearby Amuloko City Hospital. While the students were discharged after outpatient care, two others with severe injuries remain hospitalized.
According to an Oyo Road Transport Maintenance Agency staff member, who wished to remain anonymous, “brake failure caused the trailer to lose control while descending the slope.”
An eyewitness recounted, “A runaway trailer crushed a tricycle, prompting a trailing lorry to swerve and collide with another tricycle.”
The accident caused significant gridlock, forcing passengers to alight and walk. Besides the initial vehicles, two cars were damaged in the ensuing chaos.
Onlookers, prevented from torching the vehicles, criticized the drivers (now at large), suggesting the tragedy could have been mitigated if the trailer had veered into a ditch instead of hitting the tricycle.
Amuloko City Hospital’s Managing Director, Raji Wale, confirmed receiving victims. “We treated four patients with varying injuries. Two have been discharged, while two children, one of whom lost their mother, are recovering. Two critically injured victims are receiving treatment.”
Federal Road Safety Commission’s State Commander, Mary Alo, acknowledged the incident but stated she was awaiting further briefing on the details.
